OBA Programme

What is OBA
(Outcomes-Based Assessment)?

The Outcomes-Based Assessment (OBA) is a necessary assessment procedure for internationally qualified nurses and midwives who want to practice as registered nurses in Australia. Administered by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), the OBA ensures that applicants satisfy the criteria required to deliver secure and efficient care within the Australian healthcare system.
The OBA comprises a two-step assessment process including an MCQ test (NCLEX) followed by the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
NCLEX – RN (Online MCQ test)

This MCQ format computer-based exam is the cognitive evaluation for globally qualified nurses and midwives. The NCLEX-RN test assesses your professional knowledge by asking questions from many areas of your studies. NCLEX-RN is conducted by the National Council State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) using Pearson VUE test centers. So you can take the exam from outside Australia. After passing this exam, you can move to the second stage of OBA-OSCE.

OSCE exam
The second stage covers a behavioral assessment in the format of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). The OSCE has been developed to assess whether an IQNM holds the expertise, abilities, and competence of a graduate-level Australian nurse/midwife or not.
Requirements for OBA
Every applicant for the OBA has to receive a recommendation letter from AHPRA. AHPRA will assess the applicant’s eligibility under the five registration requirements set forth by NMBA.
